2026 CIS Arbitration Workshop: Treaties, Sanctions, Compliance & Enforcement

The 2026 CIS Arbitration Workshop took place online on 5 and 6 October 2026. The first day addressed the legal framework created by sanctions and countermeasures, including the EU’s response to Russia’s Lugovoy law, the UK “no liability” provision and the use of anti-suit injunctions in parallel proceedings. The second day turned to investment arbitration in the CIS region and the enforcement of awards and judgments in Kazakhstan and Greater China. It closed with a roundtable on the developments expected over the next five years.

Sir Rupert Jackson opened the workshop with a keynote on the growing role of international commercial courts, drawing on his experience at the Astana International Financial Centre Court. In contrast, Rahul Donde’s keynote on the second day considered how the Lugovoy law is moving CIS-related disputes towards new seats and institutions in Hong Kong, the UAE and Central Asia.
